Michelle Obama’s tales of woe

The wife of Sen. Barack Obama (D-Ill.) was in town for an election-eve get-out-the-vote rally, to make sure that Obama voters were fired up and ready to go for Tuesday’s primary.
Usually, such events are rah-rah, go-team affairs. But Mrs. Obama’s appearance was a little different.
It was an hour-long tale of resentment and anger.
First, she complained at great length that her husband had been treated unfairly in the Democratic presidential race. Every time he made a move forward, she said, “they” — she never spelled out exactly who “they” were — moved the goalposts a bit farther away from him.
First, “they” said he couldn’t raise the money necessary to run a big-league campaign.
But “once he proved that he could raise the money, then all of a sudden money didn’t matter,” Mrs. Obama told the crowd. “Everybody said, ‘Well, money isn’t important.’ ”
Then “they” said the test for Obama would be whether he could build a political organization. But “once it was built, they said it’s not an organization — the stakes changed again.”
Next, “they” said Obama had to win Iowa. But “once he won Iowa, then all of a sudden Iowa was no longer important.”
“They” had moved the bar again. This time, Obama had to win a primary state.
“Then we rolled into South Carolina,” Mrs. Obama said. “Then you know what they said? They said South Carolina didn’t count, because Barack was supposed to win.”
Then came Super Tuesday, and after that Obama’s stretch of victories in a series of primary and caucus states.
Still, Mrs. Obama complained, “they” tried to undermine her husband every step of the way.
“We’ve learned that we’re still living in a time and in a nation where the bar is set, right?” she said.
“They tell you all you need to do is do these things and you’ll get to the bar, so you go about the business of doing those things.
“You start working hard and sacrificing, and you think you’re getting closer to the bar, you’re working and you’re struggling, you get right to that bar, you’re reaching out for the bar, and then what happens?
“They raise the bar. Raise the bar. Shift it to the side. Keep it just out of reach.
“And that’s just what’s been happening in this race.”
All the while, the crowd cheered as Mrs. Obama listed one supposed injustice after another.
Now, it should be noted that her husband was, at that moment, on the verge of a blowout victory in North Carolina, one that would spur new calls for his opponent to drop out of the race.
So you might have thought Michelle Obama would be a pretty happy camper.
Instead, you got the sense that she was angry that the Democratic Party did not, at some early point in the race, simply award her husband the nomination by acclamation.
Instead, he had to face an opponent who — get this — really wanted to win it for herself.
Mrs. Obama had lots of other complaints, too.
She’s irritated at those people who have suggested that she and Sen. Obama are elitists.
And she appears to be still outraged — at this late date — by the fact that she had to take out loans to attend Princeton and Harvard Law School.
It took her years to pay them back, something she has kvetched about in numerous public appearances.
Imagine that! First she had to borrow money to go to some of the world’s most selective and expensive schools — schools whose graduates usually do pretty well in the world — and then they made her pay it back.
There “they” go again.
If you’re wondering how that negative message went across in Charlotte, the answer is, it went over very well.
This was as pro-Obama a crowd as you could find in a decidedly pro-Obama state.
So look for Mrs. Obama to continue sending out her message of dissatisfaction and resentment.
She appears to have begun the presidential race in an angry mood, and, despite her husband’s extraordinary success, it looks like she’ll finish it angry, too.

Michelle Obama is angry. “They” made her repay those college loans for her Princeton-Harvard Education. She’s angry that the path to the White House wasn’t carved out in a river of gold. She’s angry that Obama and she weren’t handed the keys to a platinum yacht to dock outside of the White House after being handed the keys to the White House in a no contest election.
I suppose she wants no election. She thinks that because Obama is black that he should be given the Presidency as reparations for oppression and slavery.
I’d like to know who this “they” is. Who is this nefarious collection of ne’er do wells who stand in the path of Obama. Holding that bar higher and higher. Who is this fantasy shadow group. Maybe “they” are Hillary’s vast right wing conspirators moonlighting in Michelle’s head. Rattling around in there with all of the rest of the loose left marbles.
Michelle Obama, the ever angry, Grinch of Election 2008 who tells us that America is bad except when they make her proud. The ever reproving mother hen clucking at the heels of bad, bad whitey. Jeremiah and Michelle must have had quite a few indoctrination meetings. Michelle is to Obama what Madame Mao was to Mao Zedong. His ever partisan fighter willing to throw everyone to the wolves and to criticize all in the name of her husbands power and prestige.
Yeah, I can’t wait for 4 years of this scrooge in the White House. I’m sure it will be speech after speech of how bad, bad whitey (Congress and the Senate) are holding back faith and hope. We know what’s good for you people. If only they (the Constitution and the SCOTUS) would stop raising the bar and get out of the way. I’m not sure if it is appropriate for a President or First Lady to play themselves off as victims.
Michele Obama is the perpetual victim. She’s been given everything that America can give a person. She has even wisely taken advantage of these gifts and become part of the Elite. She IS the “they” that she rails against so often in her angry speeches.
Yet, still she plays the VICTIM at every turn. Will this be the tactic in their talks with Ahmadinejad and the like. Are they going to turn the tables and play the victim card in Affairs of State as well.
How a person who was given the opportunities that Michelle Obama has been given has the gall to play the victim is beyond me. Nonetheless, Michelle Obama is convinced that “they” (translated: Whitey) is attempting to raise the bar at every avenue to hold Obama down. The guy is on the verge of being the Democratic Candidate for President based primarily upon the color of his skin. He has had overwhelming support. The press has fawned over him as if he is the coming of the Once and Future King. Yet, “they” are holding Obama down. “They” are raising the bar.
Who is this “they?”
Lose the victim shtick, Michelle. It’s unbecoming of a prospective 1st Lady. Reach out in a real and meaningful way and try to act as if you know the meaning of the word dignity.
I’m tired of the angry one. Obama needs a change. He needs Obamagirl.

Michelle Obama has not seen anything yet until Mr John McCain set those #12 size shoes on top of her little ole Obama! I’m disappointed that Michelle didn’t say anything about us small town Americans that sre clinging to our guns because we’re bitter. Wonder if the Obama’s will leave the White House white or would they consider that to be racist?
In my 20 years in the Marine Corps I worked with/around about 10 black female Senior NCOs. Everyone of them were angry and were always on the verge of playing the race card in one way or another. They all at one time or another threatened to go to the EO rep when they didn’t get their way. Forget the fact that they were promoted to Gunnery Sergeant or Master Sergeant despite the fact that everyone of them were inept and incompetent. Michelle Obama reminds me of the angry black female Gunny’s from my past. I absolutely despise her and I pray that the people of our country are smart enough not to elect her and her “Neville Chamberlain” wanna be husband.
As a woman, I can identify with the “raising the bar” idea, since I think that kind of thing does actually go on. But I don’t see Michelle or her husband as a victim of it. I have student loans, and so does every white person I know. It isn’t only black students. Taking states without big electoral votes is not a big deal; you need the big states. Everyone knows this.
I think the reason she comes across as wanting him anointed is paradoxically the same reason she comes across as not wanting him to be president: she hates this political stuff. She doesn’t want to be a political wife. Either appoint him or don’t. It has to be settled. What’s this struggle stuff about? What’s this fight stuff about?
She hasn’t seen anything yet. I wish she could have talked him out of running.

Michelle is an ungrateful spoiled left wing liberal who can not except reality that Blacks in this country chose to be who they are, chose their lifestyles, their language, their music and their morals. I once heard a leader from Africa that in the US you do not have racism but only sight discrimination. Sure there is some discrimination in this country, but no where near the level of discrimination and racism that occurs in Africa. They killed, rape, and enslave each other because of the different tribes and the shade of their dark skin. On the View it was said by Joy that only in American could we have a black man and a women running for President. How wrong, America is not the first country to have a black leader, there are a lot of black leaders in Africa, however, there is very little freedom in Africa and most of these leaders are dictators. And speaking of women – the United Kingdom and India come to mind. Maybe Michelle believe that Obama should be appointed President for life. Get rid of those nasty elections.
Michelle is a typical liberal, were recently a study was conducted and the results showed scientifically that both poor and rich liberals are very unhappy people and believe that they are the victims, whereas, conservatives were a lot more happy regardless of their financial situation and view life with a positive validation of their life and know that they have to work for what they want in life..
Terry Jr: you are right about a lot of black women who are angry, even the ones that I were close friends with alway expressed anger against this country, or the system and felt like they were victims of the White man and Republicans, even tho they were all promoted under the Bush administration to GS-12’s, and there hasn’t been slavery in this country for close to 150 years. I learned in my history class at Austin Peay that the Democrats proposed a bill in 1860, prior to the Civil War to phase out slavery in the South over a 150 year period. That means we would still have slavery in this country until the year 2010. I wonder how many Blacks know this bit of history about their beloved Democratic Party?

What worrys me is the fact that Obama will not salute our flag….what kind of a man will run for the presidency of a country and refuse to salute the very symbol that he is running for. This man was brought up as a Muslim with their teachings and beliefs and I fear for America if he is elected our president. You know the prediction of the antichrist? America take heed!
Those allegations have been proven to be mostly false. Obama does salute the flag. He was not brought up Muslim. He may well be the Anti-Christ, though. lol
She has just as much right to her anger and opinion as I do to my anger and opinions. But must we all wear them on our sleeves as if it were a badge of honor. I think America has moved forward on the race issue. I’ve seen less and less overt racism as the years have gone by.
I agree with the earlier comment that America doesn’t have a racism problem so much as it has a discrimination problem. But all discrimination is not race based in our country. I’ve felt the sting of discrimination. I’ve felt the sting of racism as well.
When America reverts to Jim Crow and those types of actions. Then I will concede the point. But we have black celebrities. We have black politicians. What’s more. We have Asian, Mexican and a myriad of other races who do well in America. Yes, there have been issues in our past. Must we re-live them every second of every day.
I think that hinders more than it aids resolution and harmony. Some people cling to their bitterness long after they should have let it loose. That bitterness hurts more than themselves. Especially when they could use that energy on more positive endeavors.
I’m not angry. I’m disgusted by this woman. She is in a position to lead. Yet, she merely tears open old wounds.

When she say they she is mostly talking about the media and the Clinton campain. To say she is talking about whitey is stupid and a down right lie. This diary is a blatant lie . Wow, you folks are really reaching, trying to turn this into a race thing (again). Obviously “they” are the pundits and prognosticators in the media that all but crowned Clinton with the nomination well before the first votes were cast. Obama had a hugely uphill battle going against the most popular and well-connected/financed brand in the Democratic party, and despite his early organizational and fund-raising successes, “they” consistently dismissed his candidacy as a long shot and kept raising the bar higher.
The story Michelle tells is one of overcoming great odds to achieve great success. And how did they do it? In the least “elitist” way possible: by building a brilliant and groundbreaking GRASSROOTS movement that even conservative leaders are in awe of. That’s not playing the victim or being one of those “angry black female(s)” that Terry Jr. angrily stereotypes; that’s talking about the essence of the American Story.
Now, how did McCain and Clinton build their organizations? Elite connections, elite fund-raising. Both came from much more privileged backgrounds and are in that much less of a position to understand average Americans and the struggles we go through more and more just to get by. The offer a meaningless “gas tax holiday” that would do nothing to relieve pain at the pump while taking away money needed for our highways and thousands of jobs.
When Michelle talks about how she and Barack recently finished paying back their student loans, that’s not complaining (though the cost of college these days is getting ridiculous while most other first-world countries provide excellent higher education for a tiny fraction of what we pay here), it’s showing that they’re normal people who can relate to us. I’m sorry, but painting her as an angry, entitled, unpatriotic, victim-playing, elite racist is transparent DESPERATION, pure and simple. She has said time and time again that she loves and believes in this country and is thankful for all of the opportunities it has provided her. She just thinks that we can do better, as does the vast majority of Americans.
(By the way, all you folks that are still clinging to Obama’s “bitter” quote, check out what he said earlier on the same day to California liberals at another private event: “We need sensible gun laws. I just got back from Montana where just about everyone has guns. [...] Fathers and sons bond over hunting. You can’t take that away from rural America. But the inner city is different, and we should tighten the laws on gun purchases and close the loopholes in gun show sales to unscrupulous buyers. The gun control people and the right to bear arms people are talking past each other about disconnected topics.” Yes, he said that to those loathsome elitist west coast limousine liberals who want to take our guns away. Sounds, I don’t know, reasonable or something!)

Screw Michelle Obama. She has received the best this country has to offer anyone and yet she bitches continuously about how terrible America is and how she’s never before been proud to be an American.
Everyone who runs for President gets attention, positive and negative. Obama seems to get more positive than negative attention, but she still bitches. She even bitches about many things most people would be grateful about, like her education.
I’m very proud to be an American, for many reasons, not the least of which because America is a great country.

Regarding the Obamas’ elitism . . . defenders of the Obama’s always refer to their backgrounds and how little money they had until recently. The problem is, elitism isn’t necessarily about the number of assets one has, its about the personal attitudes projected that scream whether or one is perceived as an elitist.
In other words, its not the size of your bank account its the size of you ego and how often you throw your ego in the faces of others that is determinative. Got that ,Michelle?
There is some that will get Obama elected or fall on their face trying. I still wonder if alot of his money isn’t coming into the front door of te black Churches in America and out the back door into Obama’s campaign camps pockets. She was referring to the American dream that keeps moving, how it is taking more and more to get to where you are going that is the bar she was referring too. The “they” is also referring to different opinions about what it will take to win the nomination. She has never, nor was she ever refering to whitey. The only people that I see acting like victims these days are white people. At every single turn white people are complaining about everything from the price of gasoline, high cost of food, loss of jobs, to the mortgage crisis…to name a few. Interestingly, while everybody seems to have a problem with Blacks, it’s NOT Blacks who can be blamed for any of the aforementioned social ills. In fact, the white man’s struggle in this country has more to do with what other WHITES are doing to him than with anything related to Blacks. Whites need to stop being victims and simply work harder and stop complaining….it’s nauseating. Now that things are getting tough for Whites, are we suddenly supposed to overlook their downtrodden, “woe is me and I’m angry about it” rhetoric? I contend that Whites are “the” angriest people on earth. All of that rage drives them to even deny that they’re angry. Unfortunately, everyone except them can see it. White rage is amazingly toxic and even sad.
My hope is that Obama will not get the nomination. As a man whose own mother is WHITE, he has been treated like a pariah by his own people….white people! Thus he’s much too good to be subjected to the anger, resentment, and rage of American whites. Whites are furious that he’s married to a Black woman and, no matter what, they are determined that they will not respect the Obamas. Well, of course I’m generalizing here because not all whites feel this way. However, deep down inside, most are pretty darn racist. I don’t know how whites ever have any peace or experience any joy because the entirity of their lives seems consumed with chasing the notion that “Blacks are racist too” while never admitting that they play a huge role in WHY some Blacks have issues with whites. We live in a sad sad world.
A couple of things. Obama’s people are the American people. Black. White. Asian. Hispanic. Native American. European immigrants. African immigrants. All of the American people. At least, I’m hoping that he feels this way. Your racial mentality is what is holding America back racially.
We are all one people.
Those things taht you listed are not social ills. Job loss is not a social ill. The mortgage crisis is not a social ill. The high price of gasoline is not a social ill.
Those are economic challenges that cross the cultural, financial, national and international divide. These things affect us all. They do not affect “whiny” white people only. These things do not affect black people only. These things do not affect immigrants only. Those challenges affect us all to one degree or another.
Race issues in America are a joke. Our racial issues are minor. America and especially many Black Americans suffer from a strange myopia as concerns race.
There are many races in America. But the only issue that is constantly decried is discrimination as it concerns Black Americans.
Open your eyes.
Look at the rest of the globe and count your blessings.
Sure. I agree. America has room for improvement. We, America, will always have room to improve. But the problems will not begin to be solved until we start thinking of ourselves as one family. One America.
When I am amongst my white family and friends, we rarely [if ever] talk about racism. The only time the subject comes up in conversation with me is when someone like Jesse Jackson or Al Sharpton or Jerry Wright or Michelle Obama starts to lament the “problems.” You either do not know many white people or have spent much of your time around whiny white liberals of the Berkeley variety.

I have no problem with Black women. I have a problem with a person who comes from MO’s background playing the victim. She is not. It’s a charade. A Stalinist Big Lie. She is comfortable, content and complacent. She’s built her castle in the air. And now she wants to pretend that she is one of the serfs who tend her fields and keep her cattle. And she wants all of the little people to buy into her lie. To swallow it. Without question. Hook, line and sinker. I’m sure she has had challenges. But she is an intellectual who plays on a field that is so far above it all that she has no idea of the struggles of real people.

One of my best friends on this planet is a black woman. She’s made her way in life and is a proud, successful professional. A proud mother. A proud human being. I love the girl like a Sister. She’s called my Momma and ratted me out for being “mean” to her. lol
I get the struggle. I understand. I truly do.
But when you get to the level at which Michelle and Obama are playing and when you are as successful and accepted as Michelle and Obama are. When you have had successes at their level. I don’t understand the resentment.
I’m a white male. I’ve faced discrimination. I’ve spent a great part of my life outside of the United States. Living abroad, I face discrimination on a scale that most Americans would deem a Constitutional Crisis. But I drive on.
I face the challenge and I drive on. I’ve been arrested and jailed for taking pictures. I’ve had guns put to my face and bribes demanded because I’m white.
I know what it is like to be hated for the color of my skin and because of my national origin.
I get it.
But I drive on and I count my blessings.
America is not the only place where bad things happen. Black people are not the only people who face adversity in America or in the world.
That is my angle. I’ve been there and done that AND I’m white.
I’m one of the happiest sons of bitches you are ever gonna meet in this life. But I’m probably the only sorry son of a bitch you’ll ever meet who is like me. lol

My problem with black people is that I wish they would get off my back for something that happen 100’s of years ago. I didn’t have anything to do with it and the people walking this Earth today had nothing to do with it, so quit thinking that we owe you something because we don’t. The young black people should pull up their pants and go to school so they can get a job and make their own living! Enough said?
I am not from the US. But you do not need your First Lady to be angry all the time. Can you imagine the impact of that on your president?
I also saw a picture of Barrack Obama with 3 other Democratic personalities onstage, and Obama was not properly respecting the flag of the United States.
That was a very bothersome picture for me, and I not even an American.
We are obviously concerned about the shape of the politics in the US. Whatever happens to the US after November will definitely affect nations around the world, in varying degrees. I just could not understand why someone wants to be the COMMANDER-IN-CHIEF when he cannot even respect the very symbol of Freedom which the US for generations has championed all over the world.
That is a huge cognitive dissonance I could not settle in my mind.

Given the current chaotic political climate, I think its pretty silly that people are nit picking at every little sound bite that they find on the web. Its a given that current mainstream media is not really trying to show who and what these candidates are… I come with a simple suggestion; follow the money…. Who is funding these individuals that at some point you are going to vote for… A corporation? A group rich elite? I suggest that if you are soo caught up in “she meant this, he meant that” in every little speech, you really are not going to see these people for who they are. All this aside, I find it hard to vote for someone who claims to be a veteran of international affairs one day, and then has problems figuring out what nation/factions are associated with the enemy that we are currently fighting. At some point I suggest to ask yourselves is there a time when someone might be too old to lead the country. All this aside, its your vote, use it and appreciate it, because at some point you may start to wonder if it will be counted.
Mrs. Oboma might be able to overcome her anger by educating herselfe aabout the history of slavery. She may gain some perspective by learning that the British and thewhite americans were the ones who ended the practice. Maybe a little gratitude is in order.
I’m a white, Southern woman and I just want to tell y’all this thing I’ve learned – not every woman who says things without a big, fake smile is angry. It’s called a cultural difference, sweetheart. Try getting out of your house once in a while and go interact with some people who don’t live on your street.

draft8399 — Please revise your history… It it important to know that the leaps and bounds that most European nations gained were from imperialism… As for the US, its gains have been at the exploit of many individuals indentured servitude. For her to carry a chip on her shoulder in todays age should be completely reasonable as most people who are making under 50k/year should as well. Given the rate that the dollar has depreciated in the last 40 years; people are earning a lot less than their fore fathers. If one were to look at the stratification of wealth in our current society, one could see that the face of indentured servitude has shifted to the face of the “Have and Have Nots.” Take a look at the book Ishmael by Daniel Quinn at some point.

I could go on and on with this. Folks like you love your lazy one layer of historical ranting. To go back further would be disastrous for your emotional state and your weak, lifeless, baseless arguments.
It just so happens that Euros were the last to conquer the world. Afther they conquered the world, the rules started to change based largely upon the progressive movements within the Euro communities. This includes America. America created the momentum to bring about the age in which we now exist. If we still played by the rule books of the non-Euros, there would be no progressive movements. There would be only despotic Monarchies and totalitarian thugs.

There must be some misunderstanding. I do not expect anyone to pay back what has been taken unfairly in the past. You are correct that my first post was on a single layer abstraction, but I did this to give draft8399 a referencing point. You state “If we still played by the rule books of the non-Euros, there would be no progressive movements”, which is ideal as there were and still are societies that live in a more socialistic system of government, my point however is that given the current progression of our society (the capitalistic war machine), through the depreciation of the currency we use, and the stratification of disbursement of wealth, we are in a situation of servitude. Here is a question to consider, when you make a decision to do something in an average day, how often do you consider the cost of what you are going to partake in?
anyway, given that you feel that I am a part of the “You folks” club, I feel this may be my last post on this page. My best to you and thanks for the fun.
My apologies for the inhospitable sounding “you folks” club remark. I have pretty thick skin and oft times forget that some folks are more sensitive. All of us are part of some group even if that group doesn’t describe the whole of our beliefs or being.
In an average day, my decisions may cost me or someone I know our lives. I give thought to this.
I often think about the cost of our consumerist society. America somewhat sickens me at times. Much of our comfort and luxury comes at the expense of the global community. Yet, we are supposed to be a “Christian Nation.” Yes…the irony. I just don’t see much way around it or how to change it short of some sort of new Jeffersonian revolution. But seeing as we are dealing with humanity…what would be the point.
Socialism is evil. It robs the soul. The spark of life. Look at our trailer parks and ghettos if you need proof of that. Look to Europe and their undying need to compromise with ugliness in order to maintain their comfort.
Communism is much worse. It murders all that it touches. Anytime humans get that much power over others, they become warped. It’s never not happened in the history of humanity.
Capitalism stains the soul with the blood of it’s victims across the globe. But it also allows for upward mobility in a peaceful manner. Sweatshops across the globe thank their stars for that 1.25 dollars a day. And Americans and Euros complain about paying 4 dollars a gallon for gas.
It should be enough to start a revolution.
Even so. I still love America. Sometimes I don’t know why. I don’t know if I will remain in America later.
What does all of this have to do with Michelle Obama? She’s lived and thrived off of the same capitalism that enslaves masses across the globe. She’s risen to the top of the World on the backs of these people. Yet, she has the gall to complain that someone, anyone is holding her and Barack back or continuously raising the bar.

I have been trying my best to research the presidential canidates to educate myself where they stand, etc (although, I must admit that I have already made up my mind and would rather gnaw my own hand off than use it to vote for Obama, but that’s besides the point).

I suggest you all read “Racism without Racists” by Eduardo Bonilla-Silva.
